NHLNumbers Logo Contest Entries

Just over a week ago we announced a contest to design a new NHLNumbers logo. And aside from those designers who castigated us for soliciting spec work or something, the response was fairly positive. We received a number of excellent entries which we have been poring over with serious minds and profound thoughts.

It's too difficult a decision for us, I think, so we'd like reader impressions as well. We'll forgo the easily skew-able web poll in favor of yays or nays in the comments. Share your thoughts and we'll pick the winner from the finalists by the end of the day.

Thanks again to to everyone who participated.

First up we have what was obviously the strongest submission -

Luckily it was from Nations Network owner Wanye Gretz who was therefore ineligible to enter. Nevertheless, he clearly set a pretty high bar.

Following in no particular order are the true potentials:

ENTRY A

ENTRY B

ENTRY C

ENTRY D

ENTRY E

ENTRY F

ENTRY G

ENTRY H

ENTRY I

ENTRY J

ENTRY K

So that's the field. Have at 'er folks.

In order of preference:

1. Anything with Scarlett Johansson eating a banana in it... and, oh yeah, holding a goalie mask, hockey stick, scorecard, whatever

2. D.

3. Wayne's

4. J.

5. Anything with a FIST in it.

Entry C! the reason: a mighty nations FIST

Assuming a preferential ballot:

C - it stays consistent with the "Fist" logo while incorporating the brackets and hashtag that are associated with the online community and analysis. Also, the blue colour is reminiscent of the old Hockey Night in Canada jerseys and has a "non-denominational" feel.

A pretty strong candidate, in my opinion.

D (White on Black) - the stick/tracker moving into the foreground is strong and compelling. It likely has a good lifespan to it as well and won't look outdated too quickly. It is simple to read and gets the point across about the site's content.

Those are my two preferred candidates.

Has anyone considered commissioning Stocc to do an ASCII logo?

Are you certain we can't vote for Wanye's? It is representative of the Nations' fans and our slick computer grooves.

Meow I am surprised that there is only one actual fist logo!

As I see it none of them really hit the true mark of The Nation Network representation.

I think Entry D is the stongest "logo" And Entry C is the closest to the Nation theme.

I would say combine the 2 ideas to come up with something like this...

http://www.teamfist.com/nhlnumbers/

just my 2 cents

My vote would be:

1. http://www.teamfist.com/nhlnumbers/

2. D

3. C

Ideally, if you could take option D and add the FIST, that would be be the best choice.

Meow I do apologize, I dont wish to complicate things haha... It just seemed like the logical idea meshing those two together.

Some would say.

If Entry C and Entry D made love, and Wanye's Entry delivered the baby...

This is what the magical force would create.

I second this one. That's got it all. I like C and D, but this takes the best of both and creates the best logo overall!

C. It looks good and it's the only one consistent with the rest of the nation theme and the only one that would look good small (as a twitter avatar or whatever).

I like the new entry.. Definitely the lower pic with all the numbers in the blue area.

Looks a little too much like Oilers Nation with the Shape.. but it's cool.

Well done on the fly Lead Hands McLezy!

A - has the cleanest and best design, and honestly the lack of a fist is probably a good thing given that people (like me) use small screen mobile devices and one fist logo begins to look like every other.

Can someone forward me the Scar-Jo logo? I tried using google to find it and got...distracted. And then I needed a shower.

@vetinari

Thanks for opening up the discussion. C and D are your choices.

Re: C If it's affiliated heavily, or completely with this website, then it's obvious why it's appropriate - it looks like the other logos. I like the integration of the math symbols in the bracketing around the outside of the shape. All those obscure math symbols used by TV character geniuses on the chalkboard are a wealth of design fodder, and it would be nice to see more submissions playing around with those! (the only kicker is the text block at the bottom. In my opinion it's a little static, and contains too much lettering. It would be nice if it were a touch simpler, so you could enjoy the impact of the top part. Just a little opinion - but a great logo) *Just a sidenote: that upraised fist has a lot of connotations which can be claimed or downplayed as desired, but pretty hard to ignore as I'm sure you're aware. One of the most well-known being a political symbol of the New Left. Also - proletariat, uprising, struggle, communism.

Re: D Inventive use of stick shaft as chart line. What I like even more is the use of the shield shape (NHL), but in a more generic way as a chart. The thin lines found in the chart connote graph paper, but interestingly also look like latitudinal and longitudinal lines of the earth. With the stick coming from this local, and arriving dynamically to point at the word "NHL", it accomplishes exactly what the concept of the NHL Numbers website is all about. Applying a broader perspective (the world/stats/the shield shape) to the NHL (via the stick in the logo submission). The whole logo is clean and legible with minimal investment in deciphering text as the word NHL is emphasized, and 'numbers' is downplayed.

If I were you, I'd be happy with either one. Maybe decide how important it is to echo the other Nation logos. Or go in a new direction with a nice easy to view icon.

The "new combined" logo entry is the perfect example of why you should hire a professional. It's a terrible idea. It's kinda like a Well endowed lady wearing a parka.

entry D is borderline perfection by itself.

I was surprised at the quality of that logo given the fact it's a contest open to anyone with a mouse and a bootleg photoshop. Its the real deal, guys.
