If Toronto's special teamers were racehorses, we would would call him Elmer.  If they were Tibetan, they'd be vulture food.  If they were seafarers, they would live in Davy Jones locker.  The Maple Leafs have been a pretty bad team for a very long time, but their special teams have been even worse.  In 2009-10, the Leafs hit an NHL post-lockout low with an STE of 88.6, but that's par for the course for these Leafs.

Maple Leafs STE Rank
Year Rank
2005-06 T-10th
2006-07 T-25th
2007-08 28th
2008-09 29th
2009-10 30th
2010-11 29th
2011-12 27th

The last time the Maple Leafs' special teams were better than 25th in the league was 2005-06 when Pat Quinn was in charge.  Since then the Leafs have gone through three head coaches - each one worse than the one before.  It's got to get better, right?

Nope.  This season, the Leafs are off to a very Leaf-like start - tied for 26th - and their STE sits at 88.7, a tenth of a percent above their recent record low.  Someone get this team a greaseboard and this guy.

amazing...you'd think luck would help them out of the basement for at least 1 season.

Six straight years in the bottom of the STE, no apparent direction that could provide an explanation (intentionally rebuilding, major injuries, a one-season hiccup), and no sign of any improvement or positive change in sight.

There has been so much change recently that I am hesitant to suggest more, but there has been an ironic correlation of the amount of change the franchise has seen to the consistency of their results.
