Has Iginla Submitted a 4 team list?

Kent Wilson
March 24 2013 11:21AM

According to Renaud Lavoie of RDS (warning: french) , Jarome Iginla has officially submitted a list of 4 potential destinations: Pittsburgh, Boston, Los Angeles and Chicago. I have heard from other quarters for about a week or so that Iginla has indeed waived his NTC, so it wouldn't surprise me if this report proves to be accurate. It's somewhat of a strange outlet to break this kind of news, however, so for now we'll consider this more rumor than fact.

The teams on the list make sense given they are the 4 major contenders for the cup this year. This week we'll investigate what each of them might be willing and able to give up for Iginla should Feaster now finally choose to trade him.

Feel free to speculate in the comments.

I'm surprised he didn't list STL. Guess he doesn't think too much of their Cup chances.

At this point, anything we get is better than the nothing we will get this offseason when he just leaves.

No chance.. St.Louis is not going anywhere, and Iggy wouldn't waive to go to the Bolts.

The Pens should value Iggy, he brings toughness and protection to Malkin and Crosby. No one will take liberties with them and you know playoff hockey. Cheap shots are bound to happen.

Iginla will drop the gloves with whoever and they will pay the price, plus his leadership will tune down the whine factor. Pens will win the Cup with Iggy.

If the Bruins get him he give them that scoring winger.

No matter who he goes to he will tip them toward the Cup, the whole point of it all. Teams will want him just as much to prevent the other three from getting him.

Just thought everyone should see this comical post as per Roger Millions tweet. "Hartley adds that the Flames are in trouble if they don't win a number in a row, they can plan for something else." #can't imagine.

That's a very valid point, the winner not only gets Iginla but it also is assured their opponent doesn't get the best reinforcement out there.

The reason I think Pitts won't value Iggy as high as the rest is because their pressing need is a top 4 dman and the fact that they openly use an advanced stats analysis institute in their assessment of players. Ask Kent, Pike and the boys, Iggy doesn't impress when it comes to underlying numbers.

I've said it in many an Iginla trade thread, the return won't be much, the best we can hope for is that we can pit those teams against each other to increase the return somehow.

As per Daren Dreger... sounds like Brenden Morrow to the Pens is in place... so, maybe you can scratch that off of Iggy's list...

Jarome is going to be 36 this summer, .... 36. He was a great player, .... was .... The potential returns on a player of this vintage will not be what some here imagine. Face of the franchise or not. Some of the speculation on CP leads me to believe fans are completely snockered-drunk on Calgary Kool-aid.

When you make a comment like that, you should use examples.. what kind of return do you think? We'll see what Morrow gets and add to it...

Remember how we held on to Olli at the trade deadline last year.....I fear Feasty may be missing the boat again. I hope we don't suffer another Feaster Famine (sorry, had to). Morrow to Pitt, the list is down to three.

I'm just being optimistic... but it could be that that the Pens realized that they were out of the running because they didn't have all the pieces?

My view - if B. Morrow is worth J. Morrow + then iggy would be worth more - not a bad play for Feaster to see what Pitt pays for B Morrow...Still three solid teams who will all want into the action. Heat probably goes up on BOS to make a deal as well.

Feaster tried to move Olli last year but he refused to waive his no trade clause. Olli was the one who screwed us by not waiving and we got nothing for him when he walked away in the summer.

The city of Calgary and Iginla stand in a snowy meadow at the edge of a thick forest, a la the Disney classic White Fang. Calgary stares at the ground dreading what it must do. Iginla looks to Calgary, head cocked to the side in an inquisitive manner, and pants with his tongue hanging out. "You're free," says Calgary, "go on." It points to the majestic and wild forest without looking up from its feet. Confused, the hockey player trots over to Calgary and nuzzles its hand affectionately. Calgary withdraws and chokes back tears. "Get out of here!" it gasps. "You don't belong with me anymore! You belong with your own kind! You belong with a winner!!" Still not grasping his city's words and believing he can help in some way, Iginla follows behind the city of Calgary as it starts to leave the peaceful, snow-covered meadow and head back to its cabin. Turning violently, Calgary picks a large piece of wood from the ground and hurls it directly at the hockey player, while it screams between sobs. "Don't you get it? It's for your own good!! I DON'T LOVE YOU ANYMORE!" The thrown stick connects directly with Jarome's ribs and he lets out a yelp as he scampers away, hurt-filled eyes never leaving the the city of Calgary. He begins to inch toward the wilderness. Calgary holds its face and sobs uncontrollably as it plods back to its lonely frontier cabin, pausing only to look skyward a moment later when a plaintive wolf's howl is heard in the distance.

Not so sure the list is down to three, although I still think the Bruins are frontrunners. The pens still have a lot of chips to play with. Morrow AND Iginla together drastically improves their grit level, sorely lacking last year.

Has anyone speculated on what the Hawks might be willing to part with? How about Brendan Saad and a high pick. Could we pry away one of their prospect centres? Mark McNeil? Phillipe Danault? Brandon Pirri?

This might work in our favour, in the end. In life, you don't necessarily get what you deserve. You get what you negotiate. To me, Jarome Iginla is a better rental acquisition than Brendan Morrow. Period. So if Morrow commands that return...and it is just speculation as far as which/how many teams may be involved. I do believe Pitt would be out of the running, but Boston, Montreal, Vancouver, etc will maybe come on even stronger. There is a part of me that senses Chicago wins this whole thing, though. If you are a team that feels they are close, one prospect or draft choice is irrelevant in the short-term big picture.

Spooner, Krug and a 1st...

Spooner become a roster player on Calgary.

Bruins have plenty of cap room so if you're Calgary grab two prospects - both of whom have a shot at playing next year.

Downside to Krug is his size...

Horton will be re-signed by the bruins. Any notions of getting a top 6 forward or or top 2 defenseman should be considered ridiculous. Getting seguin is even laughable. In regards to a roster player, the requirements should be a forward/defenseman that is 26 years old or younger. Mind you if feaster could somehow snag a top 6 or top 4 forward/D we immediately win the trade. I don't want Jonathan Bernier from the KIngs. In terms of teams he could get traded to, I believe either the Kings or Bruins have the least likely chance of winning the cup as they aren't as talented as Chicago or Pittsburgh. This their first round picks become more attractive. In regards to the roster player I believe Chicago has the best options . Bolland would be the best conceivable option, if not him then I would be fine with shaw or Kruger or bickell. In terms of prospects, Pittsburgh boasts loads of D, and Chicago has the best forward prospects such as Saad or teravainen. So basically I think all of these teams have a chance to get the deal done, with Chicago and Pittsburgh as the front runners. I believe iginla would like to go to the eastern conference that way it wouldn't be as painful for him to play vs flames. Which makes Pittsburgh the better option. But then the argument could be made that the Bruins REALLY don't want Pittsburgh to get iggy because that definately makes them better than the B's. here's to hoping a bidding war, best of luck jarome.

Your thoughts?

What a depressing season, play terribly, make no moves, then finally a ROR offer sheet only to narrowly avoid a colossal blunder. Lose, lose lose, signs of an Iggy trade to help right the ship, then beaten to the punch by Dallas and Morrow. fml

I don't think it is essentially down to 3 teams, I could still see Pittsburgh making a trade. Iggy for beau Bennett, their 1st , and someone like maataa. That would be more than fair. This might even improve calgary's boat, if this is how much a washed up morrow can fetch. Iginla would look WAYYY better beside Malkin and Neal than morrow ever could/would.

Trading any the veterans on this team for picks would be the way I would go. Although the return for Iginla, Kiprusoff, Bouwmeester, Cammalleri,Sarich, Babchuck, etc might be minimal, this team is in a dire need of infusion of life/enthusiasm. The only thing I don't want Feaster do is trade away picks.

While getting first round picks would be ideal, I say obtain as many 2nd, 3rd or 4th's as possible. Flames have far better luck in the later rounds anyway.

Secondly, the key to any trades the Flames might make is to find prospects / players no matter skill, size,or coachability, find the ones who will compete and play hard on nightly basis. For the past 4 seasons, along with this one, too many passengers and passive attitude has set in with this team. Like I have said previously no other teams in this league are afraid to play this team. They are very soft and have no push back type players.

I think no one would complain if we got Tervannian, Boland & a 1st from Chicago. I just think Feaster wants a top D prospect because of other potential deals he might have in the works. I'm shocked Vanc wasnt on his list.

In a dream world does Chicago give us Bolland plus anything for Iggy.

Tervainen and a 1st, sure (and I'd take that deal), but Bolland is key to their 3rd line.
