Has Iginla Submitted a 4 team list?

Kent Wilson
March 24 2013 11:21AM

According to Renaud Lavoie of RDS (warning: french) , Jarome Iginla has officially submitted a list of 4 potential destinations: Pittsburgh, Boston, Los Angeles and Chicago. I have heard from other quarters for about a week or so that Iginla has indeed waived his NTC, so it wouldn't surprise me if this report proves to be accurate. It's somewhat of a strange outlet to break this kind of news, however, so for now we'll consider this more rumor than fact.

The teams on the list make sense given they are the 4 major contenders for the cup this year. This week we'll investigate what each of them might be willing and able to give up for Iginla should Feaster now finally choose to trade him.

Feel free to speculate in the comments.

Very true schevvy....

As much as the majority of us have come to want changes, and real change can only happen with Iggy moving on, it will be an emotional time.

This man has represented our team, our city, our communities, province, hell, even Country, with incredible class, dignity, honesty, and strength. No late-night bar troubles, a true family man, respectful of everyone, tough and talented as arguably anyone in the game...

He will leave as this team's most popular player ever (with apologies to Lanny) and, if in fact he moves on, I thank him for these years of dedicated service to the hockey team I love.

I think the Saddledome should begin tonights game with a standing ovation for our Captain. And if he's still here when the Av's come to town Wednesday, another standing ovation for our Captain...

He has done his best, folks. He is a Hall-of-Famer in waiting. And we were lucky enough to see it live all these years...go get the Stanley Cup, Iggy.

Hold on folks, I'm wiping away the tears. It's inevitable now. The Iginla era is coming to an end. It'll be for the better for both him and the team, but it doesn't mean it's not sad. :'(

The lights go dim, the crowd murmurs. Everything is still, all that can be seen is eternal darkness.

A single light shines solemnly on the entrance ramp. There is nothing, and then:

"OLE! OLE OLE OLE!"

"OH MY GOD, IT'S THE MONTREAL CANADIENS!"

The house lights come on, Jarome Iginla stands in the middle of the ring in a Habs jersey, clocks Jay Feaster and Fred Shero with a chair.

Iggy rips up the "4 team list" and rides off on a motorcycle.

What a twist

Get ready for the fun to start.

On a side note I expect the flames to do better or at least the same without him. He's been a non factor in most games this year so losing him will change little.

This is good news though. I wish there were a few more teams but I suspect Boston will be the winner.

Even before the list was out, the Calgary Flames made the decision internally they were going to trade Jarome Iginla.

We have 3 top hockey insiders, Dreger, McKenzie and Elliot Friedman have all confirmed Iginla has agreed to waive his NTC only to Stanley Cup Contenders which are Boston, Pittsburgh, Chicago, and L.A.

Whether we like it or not, accept it or not, the process to deal the long time Flame has begun and Jarome Iginla will no longer be a Calgary Flame, can't believe I'm typing this.

The city of Calgary and Iginla stand in a snowy meadow at the edge of a thick forest, a la the Disney classic White Fang. Calgary stares at the ground dreading what it must do. Iginla looks to Calgary, head cocked to the side in an inquisitive manner, and pants with his tongue hanging out. "You're free," says Calgary, "go on." It points to the majestic and wild forest without looking up from its feet. Confused, the hockey player trots over to Calgary and nuzzles its hand affectionately. Calgary withdraws and chokes back tears. "Get out of here!" it gasps. "You don't belong with me anymore! You belong with your own kind! You belong with a winner!!" Still not grasping his city's words and believing he can help in some way, Iginla follows behind the city of Calgary as it starts to leave the peaceful, snow-covered meadow and head back to its cabin. Turning violently, Calgary picks a large piece of wood from the ground and hurls it directly at the hockey player, while it screams between sobs. "Don't you get it? It's for your own good!! I DON'T LOVE YOU ANYMORE!" The thrown stick connects directly with Jarome's ribs and he lets out a yelp as he scampers away, hurt-filled eyes never leaving the the city of Calgary. He begins to inch toward the wilderness. Calgary holds its face and sobs uncontrollably as it plods back to its lonely frontier cabin, pausing only to look skyward a moment later when a plaintive wolf's howl is heard in the distance.

I've also been hearing reports that the asking price is a top 4 defensive prospect, a roster player, and a draft pick.

Ideally, I would like to see a trade with Pittsburgh. People are saying they don't need to break the chemistry with Dupuis on the first line, but Iginla is a huge upgrade to him. I drool over the fact of Iginla playing with Crosby again.

The Flames would get a nice return. Mostly because of the depth of defensive prospects in Pittsburgh.

A return would be something like this IMO:

Top 4 D prospect: Maatta, Pouliot, Harrington, Morrow, or Despres.

Roster player: Vitale, Kennedy, or Jeffrey.

Draft Pick: Conditional 1st or 2nd, depending what Iginla does in the offseason/ if Pittsburgh wins a cup

We'd probably have to throw in a draft pick in there tho wouldn't we. That's just how it goes lately.

A four team list is plenty, as long as those teams are interested. And we have all heard that most of them may indeed be considering Iggy.

Lavoie suggests the flames are asking for an 'established player' and 1st round pick.

"un joueur établi en retour et un choix au repêchage de première ronde"

On a side note: this report conflicts a little with what Friedman reported last night: that Iginla would only go East.

I hope this bit of rumour is accurate for the city's sake and for Jarome's sake. However, it's too little too late. Some of the names I'd be interested in:

Penguins: Beau Bennett or Simon Despres. I wish we could land either Letang or B Sutter from them but too late.

Bruins: Ryan Spooner

Kings: Bernier or Tyler Toffoli. I know Voynov is wishful thinking

Hawks: Andrew Shaw and MArcus Kruger.

Having said that, I still don't think Jarome gets traded. The Flames mgmt is too imbecile to rock the boat and make the changes necessary to move forward. It will be painful few years for fans here in C town.

So it is happening. Might actually get more now than we would have last yera in a normal 82 game season deadline. Less teams as sellers. Buyers bidding over Iggy should prove to be very rewarding. I think Iggy is helping put the Flames in a good position to take the highest bid. Good on him. Hopefully he gets a couple tonight in a loss. Pump up the stock price,

The good news is all these teams have good prospects that the Flames can target. Bad news is the First Round Pick they'll inevitably get is going to low. Probably anywhere from 20-30. Flames should try and get a 2nd Rounder too considering they don't have one.

cpbrowner:"I've also been hearing reports that the asking price is a top 4 defensive prospect, a roster player, and a draft pick."

I don't understand the focus on defensive prospects as the Flames could use a high-end forward prospect just as much IMO (though a goaltender is not as pressing a need). In particular, a center prospect would be extremely helpful.

Pittsburgh still seems like the most natural fit, especially if the above is true as they have a good half dozen D prospects that are very good.

Of which my preference is to avoid Harrington, as I see him as the 2nd coming of Scott Hanan, and to target Pouliot or Morrow who have higher end offensive abilities. Maata scares me as he seems like the classic 'tweener' Dman, not great at either offense or defense and the kind of guy who can't stay reliably in your top 4. In truth, I'd like to get Beau Bennett from them almost as much as Pouliot or Morrow.

Unless Boston puts Dougie Hamilton into the offer (and I don't see them doing that, though you never know), I don't think there is a good fit. Chudinov is perhaps a possibility, but he might have to be convinced to come over, and there is a good question whether his ceiling is that of a top 4 d-man. I'd probably take a Chudinov, and Marchand package though, but I don't see Boston putting that on offer.

From LA it comes down to Derek Forbort, or perhaps Jake Muzzin (who because of injuries is up with the Kings). If a Toffoli could also be pried loose I'd be a lot more excited.

Chicago has: Olsen, Clendening, and Johns as D prospects, but none of them set my world on fire (Tervainen though, he would be very attractive IMO). Can we get them to throw in Brandon Saad?

Trading for Horton who's about to be a UFA is kinda counter productive. That said I expect the trade to go down with Boston. They've been wanting a big winger for 2 years now and no one outside of Boston knows their system better than Weisbrod. Pittsburgh would be awesome but I doubt they value Iggy as high as the rest as we now know they use The Sports Analytics Institute when making these decisions and Iginla doesn't shine as bright when looked at through the Analytics microscope.

My guess is Iggy and Nemisz to Boston for Ryan Spooner, Jordan Knight and a 1st.

I'd then peddle Cammalerri at 25% off to Pitts, Chicago and LA. (Salary wise)

If Iginla really gets traded, this would be a perfect opportunity to sell the likes of JBo, Cammi, Stempniak, Comeau, Tanguay, etc. to load up on picks and prospects. If we could get 3 1st rounders (incl our own) and a couple of 2nd rounders, it will make the turnaround a lot easier.

I would like to see Scoreface, Gio Backs stick around for leadership. I can't stress enough how important centres are for the success of a team. All top teams in the league have a great lineup of centres. THat's why i think Nate Mac and Nichushkin are better option than Jones. Although we will have a decent shot at landing Monahan.

I know Iggy has to waive his current NMC but can his "new" contract contain a NMC/NTC or is it voided as soon as he is traded? Seems strange to sign an extension that says he can't be traded or moved from LA,for example, when technically he is signing with the Flames...know what I mean?

Yeah I hear ya, but an extension doesn't kick in until July, so the terms of the extension don't kick in till then either. Jeff Carter had a NTC signed with Philly, but they traded him to CBJ before the clause kicked in. This is a similar scenario.

If they have a potential deal in place to move JBo for foreward help, would be nice to land an almost ready for prime time top 4 D-man in an Iggy trade. For now, I'll assume Feaster and co. know what they are doing, though I reserve the right to change my opinion on that.

This is pure arm-waving speculation, but I think the demand for a D prospect might be a signal that J-Bo is the next lot up on the auction block. Getting a top D prospect allows for both success in the long term and failure in the short term (maximizing the value of our draft picks this year).
