Jarome Iginla Traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins

Kent Wilson

As has been speculated all night, Aaron Ward of TSN recently confirmed the Flames long time captain has been traded to the Bruins. The assumed return is Alex Khokhlachev, Matt Bartkowski and a first round pick. We will update with further confirmation and other news as it breaks.

For Kenneth AgostinoBen Hanowski and a first round pick.

Good luck in Pittsburgh Jarome. And thank you for everything. Go win that cup.

More to come...

A note on the prospects from the Pittsburgh Tribune:

>> I’ve asked our beat man Josh Yohe to summarize the prospects the Penguins gave up, and he emailed this back to share with you: “Hard to explain how little the Penguins gave up for Iginla. These are not elite prospects. Not even close.”

Josh also wrote up these capsules:

Kenny Augustino, 5th round pick in 2010: A skilled forward who the Penguins thought might someday have a chance to play in the NHL. Scored 15 goals at Yale last season. Penguins liked him, didn’t love him, and never considered him to be anything resembling an elite prospect.

Ben Hanowski, 3rd round pick in 2009 draft: Numbers regressed noticeably during his senior year at St. Cloud State this season. Most goals he ever scored in a college season was 23. Has 16 this season. Penguins viewed him as a reasonably talented power forward prospect. Big kid at 6-2, 210. But, like D’Augustino, was not considered an adequate prospect, but absolutely not an elite one.

>> Cutting through it all: Neither of these two prospects ranked among the Penguins’ internal top 10. No kidding.

And a first-round Pittsburgh pick will be somewhere between No. 28-30.

Shero basically acquired a Hall of Famer for nothing.

You can't rebuild unless you have something to rebuild around. We basically received two no name prospects (one a 3rd round and 5th round pick) and a late first round draft pick (which could well be 28-29-30). We receive nothing back to build around, a dismal failure for Feaster.

Yes, it's obvious that these prospects are not elite. However, the 30th pick in the 2013 draft is not "nothing". On the one hand you have Rex condemning Feaster for giving up our 2nd in 2013 in the Cammi trade because it was going to be so high, then we have Fotiu's Ghost claiming Pit 1st is "nothing". Sure it could amount to nothing in the end, or it could be converted into a first line player. Bottom line, we were going to lose Iggy for nothing if he was not moved, I like this option better.

End of the day, Jarome was leaving anyways and had a NTC to dictate/veto any trade.

From that standpoint, I'm alright with it.

Shocking!

I didn't think that the Flames had the acumen to trade Iginla.

The best part of the trade is ownership and management have finally come to the realization that this team is on the decline and changes were much needed.

Going forward the trade may not be worth much right now but let us see what happens down the road. If this team was so reluctant to make changes it is time to be patient on the impact of this trade.

Essentially the next potential franchise player was never going to happen in the trade, that player must be drafted in this years draft.

For one month it's hard to say, if he had a year left on his contract it would be a different conversation, which is why we should have traded him last year.

Would love to see them take the B's pick & some sort of prospect to try & move up in the draft.

Sad to see Iginla go, happy he has a shot to win a cup.

Will be cheering for the Bruins!

They likely aren't considering Hamilton a prospect anymore. According to hockeys future him and spooner are rated the same.

WTF ? Jerome has the stats to prove his value ..yes. He never (in my opinion) took the Team on his back and carried them to glory beyond their talent level. Take Kipper out of the ripp off against Tampa Cup final year and where would we see Jerome ? Slow starter- Every year , documented uncoachable team member......He wa good , yes , very good In His way, this is a good and 3 years late development.

Unless its conditional on the B's going to the finals or resigning Iggy. I could live with that. Still....

Maybe we try to resign Iggy in the summer and re-trade him at next years DL. Heck, we could make it an annual thing like Tkachuk.

From previous trades that I can think of, most conditional picks involving players re-signing usually hinge around a specific date and involve picks in the year following.

In this case, I would have to assume that the pick is for 2014, if conditions are activated.

Good luck, Iggy. Few players have served their team with such class. All the best in your cup run. (The Bruins look like they do need you, based on tonight. :) )

For those bemoaning the small returns Feaster got, consider he was in a tight spot. The pool of potential trade partners was essentially down to three. Realistically, would Chicago or LA have given us anything better? You'd have to think not, or we'd have taken it.

The market of three dictated the price here. Time to cut our losses and move on....

After Mike Green's frightening giveaway the other night, I wonder if Washington would give us their first rounder for Buowmeester?

My sincere hope is that fans let the players coming back in the trade off the hook for any resentment or anger they may feel over the move.

Heaven knows I wouldn't want to be a 20 year old kid as the principle piece of the Iginla trade.

This Khokhalechev may be hard to spell but hear he's a pretty solid centre prospect. Something we dont have right now. Bartowski I have no idea & I'm sure we are going to get our 1st rounder. We have been told over & over about how underwhelming the returm will be, I'm not ecstatic & I'm not surprised. It was time for change & remember, we just jettisoned 7.0 million from our cap. That is huge & consider a high end UFA as the remaining part of this return. Right now, it just stings seeing a player move on that was special to most Calgary fans (maybe except for Wolf). It will sink in & Flames can now finally move forward and start a new era. Win a Cup Iggy! Godspeed! We hope you will be back one day.

@T4AFlames:

Peter Chiarelli is a very shrewd man. A lot of GMs have been thoroughly beaten by him.

He wouldn't take that deal, because he knows he can do better. Also, because he doesn't want Cammalleri's cap hit next year -- or even this year, because he can still load up with big, mean, tough, nasty talent for a smaller cap hit, at the deadline.
