Jarome Iginla Traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins

Kent Wilson

As has been speculated all night, Aaron Ward of TSN recently confirmed the Flames long time captain has been traded to the Bruins. The assumed return is Alex Khokhlachev, Matt Bartkowski and a first round pick. We will update with further confirmation and other news as it breaks.

For Kenneth AgostinoBen Hanowski and a first round pick.

Good luck in Pittsburgh Jarome. And thank you for everything. Go win that cup.

More to come...

Wait...can't guys who are in college in the states choose not to sign with the team that drafted them? Are these guys even signed by PIT? That could make all the difference.

Assuming they are, you have Iggy for 20 games for a first, a third, and a fifth. I accept that.

I'm okay with this deal. While neither player coming back are going to be superstars, I think they are decent prospects and I don't believe that any team would give up a top tier prospect for a rental. The 1st round pick is at least solid and there is always the possibility of Iggy coming back after the playoffs (not likely but always possible). Finally, I think that Pittsburg gives Iggy the best chance to win the Cup and after all the years he's toiled here, he deserves that at least.

Now, who is next to go? :)

It sounds like Feaster pulled a switcheroo on the Bruins really, because pretty much everyone was reporting the Bruins were the front runner right up until the end.

I wonder if it really would have been "up to iggy" where he went if Boston had not made that pick conditional. Moot now.

Who will Iggy line up with????

I a very happy for Jarome... he has a real shot at the cup and Pittsburgh just became favored to win

TSN screwed it up because they HAVE to be first, it makes them seem more credible. Have you noticed NONE of them have tweeted since they said they confirmed Boston only to hear Pittsburg. The only thing Bobby Mack has now retweeted is the fact the prospects Calgary got are underwhelming. Those guys are so freaking bitter its funny.

My guess is Feaster sat Iggy down and said, ok, here, we have two deals, and we don't care which is taken. Which team do you want to play for?

I don't know but can't see how Pitts could afford Iggy by resigning him. Meaning he is a pure rental. I feel like this honestly might open the door if he wins the cup this year to return next season and carry on finishing his career in more of a mentoring position as we will definitely not be good next year. I'm intrigued but weary. This deal wouldn't be so bad if we ended up with him plus everything else. A potential win-win-win scenario? Lets not forget Iggy has family and young children in calgary. I would be surprised if he planned to move them with him.

Pittsburg can't sign him unless they move someone or he takes a steep discount, my only worry is he does something like sign with Edmonton or Vancouver in the summer, ugh I don't even want to think.

Because I have zero faith in our scouting dept, my preference would have been Iginla straight up for one existing decent drafted prospect...it takes the liability that is our scouting dept. out of the equation.

I always get worried when one or more garbage players are thrown into deals a la the Phaneuf deal.

I wonder if Chiarelli regrets not putting Subban into the offer now?

I expected lots of haters with any Iggy trade unless Crosby or Malkin was coming back, but I am surprised that;

- neither of the prospects was from the Pens D. - both would be college guys

That all said, one of Weisbrod's strength has been the college circuit, so maybe he's spotted a gem.

Ultimately, this was about getting a 1st in deep draft for what amounts to a playoff rental.

For everyone saying Iggy will come back, remember one of the key moments of the press conference was Feaster saying he told Iggy if he re-signed here it would be for a shorter term at less money. So... Unless nobody decides to throw money at Iggy this offseason (which isn't realistic) the odds on us suddenly deciding to open the vault and bring him back... It doesn't make much sense.

@Colin.S

They can sign him, this offseason. Penguins are currently $4M under the cap this season (WITH IGINLA) and going to have about $21M coming off their roster after this season (including Iginla and Morrow, should they not re-sign).

Bet Iginla signs in Pittsburgh for between $5M (James Neal) and $8.7M (Crosby/Malkin). Say, $6-6.5M for 3-4 years.

Let's put this in perspective.

Paul Gaustad got a 1st round pick, straight up. Paul. Freaking. Gaustad.

The Flames, for our "superstar", for the "face of our franchise", basically got the same return as Paul Gaustad.

What a kick in the balls.

I can't help but laugh at the media when they try to be hero's and jump the gun with their announcements just so they can say they were first before anything has been made official. The egg on TSN's face looks good. Great example of why the media can't always be trusted.

I wish Jarome all the best and hope that his time in Pittsburg helps him to fulfill his dream of hoisting that cup. I have always wanted to see him play with a superstar center like Crosby. I bet Sid is pretty excited about this deal too.

Via Twitter (‏@Jibblescribbits)

"In the last 20 years there have been 4 good NHL players taken at #29 (CGY's pick): Kronwall, Cheechoo, Mike Green and Steve Downie"

Wow. Just wow. Fare thee well Iginla, but I hate this team now. Feaster, King, and Edwards must go.

Calgary may actually make a run for the playoffs this season now... (not holding my breath, but after a big shakeup... people have a bit of a boost)

this was long over due, and is the best thing for Iggy and the flames.

We have now officially turned the corner.

Jarome will always be our man... and looking forward to him bringing the cup back to Calgary

Love it. For Iginlas' sake. Will he be the difference maker for Pittsburgh to win the cup?

Thank You Iginla for all the great memories and highlights.

A new era starts today in Calgary for the Flames. Who will be the face of this franchise going forward?

Again the trade was all about Jarome and what he wanted.

No matter who Feaster traded for nobody would have been happy with the return. He was in a no win situation. I am just glad he was able to get a pick in the first round (maybe 30).

All I remember when Iginla was traded here, everyone was saying Jarome who? It was only after watching him on a world stage that Flames fans got excited.

Like it or not. The right thing was done for both the player and the organization. Iginla has established his legacy with this team and community.

Now who will captain this team?

Jeez everyone on this site has been bagging for the Iginla trade all year and now that it finally happens everyone IS DONE WITH THIS TEAM!!!! What did you expect to get back for a rental player???? This deal is far better then Bostons if the 1st round pick was conditional so I am a happy camper. Mckenzie also stated it is very unlikely PIT resigns Iginla in the off season. So if PIT wins the cup I cant see Iginla going to a team other then CGY if PIT does not win he might want to try another run. But if Iginla comes back next year this deal is a home run.

I actually like this better than the Boston deal.... I'm not going to pretend to have heard of the college guys but I hadn't heard of Knovlachenkov or Barfkowski either until last week. The pick is just straight up better not being conditional.

1) If anyone knows US college players its Weisbrod... Gilles, Gaudreau, Arnold, Janko looking good.

2) This is a pure rental. Pitt gets Iggy for two months ( no guarantees after that) and we essentially get a first a third and a fifth

3) Contracts are freed up for the Jbo trade which will bring back guys under contract.

4) Iggy wins cup with Pittsburgh

5) $7mil off the books, didn't take back any dead weight.

Bonus - acknowledgment from management that we're selling, not giving up picks or prospects and aiming to fill the organizational age gap with players in their early 20's

There are many broken hearts in Calgary tonight and I'm sure your heart is broken too. Go after what you have worked your whole career for and hopefully you'll be skating with Lord Stanley. You deserve it. All the fans is Edmonton will celebrate with you. Keep being classy Iggy and we'll keep loving you. I've been reading the boards on this site of how far Iginla has declined, he's getting bashed by the top competition & should only be given sheltered minutes. On & on after every game, the same thing, Iggy is a floater, doesnt backcheck. I have been reading people arguing how we would be lucky to get a 1st rounder for him as a rental. Guess what guys, we got our 1st rounder for him. Hellooo!! How would everyone like it if we were trading Iggy & a 2014 2nd to LA for Bernier. Those were reports of the type of deals on the table. Pitt is going to have trouble resigning him, they have Letang & Malkin contracts coming up in 12 months. Look at what happened to Dallas, they lost Richards for nothing. Semin walked & Wash got zip. At least we get a 1 st in a very deep solid draft. The other guys is just polyfiller. At least we get to watch Iggy get an awful great chance at winning a Cup. all in all, not a bad night, we won a hockey game, acquired a 2nd 1st round pick, we shaved 7.0 mill off our payroll/cap & Iggy is going to a great place. Thankyou Jerome, good luck & win that Cup.

Amen. I'm loving the first-rounder and suddenly looking forward to the playoffs.
