This is a race that goes down to the wire.  Seth Jones took over from Nathan MacKinnon early, but never quite slipped the #2 ranked player.  Meanwhile Jonathan Drouin stalked the top spot, while Sasha Barkov set records in the SM-liiga and kept chugging along 4th overall.  The gap in the Consensus Rankings between #1 Seth Jones and #4 Sasha Barkov is smaller than the gap between last year's #1 Nail Yakupov and #2 Filip Forsberg.  There's a bunch of talent at the top, and it's closely bunched.  Seems like any pick in the top four will be a good one, regardless of where they're taken.

The sources for the consensus list are Bob McKenzie, Future Considerations, ISS, The Hockey News, Craig Button, Corey Pronman of Hockey Prospectus, and The Scouting Report.  Their rankings are weight by their accuracy in ranking previous drafts: Bob McKenzie's rankings carry the most weight as he's the most accurate prognosticator in the group.

Notes

  • The QMJHL won't have it's greatest draft ever, but it will have it's best first round in 10 years and it's best first two rounds in 25 years.
  •  The late movers at the top of the draft were Max Domi and Bo Horvat, both forwards on the same OHL team - the London Knights.  Curiously, the higher rated player, Domi, faced significantly weaker competition.
  • Further back in the draft, defensemen Samuel Morin and Mirco Mueller shot up the late rankings.  Morin is ranked inside of the top 15 by more than one team.
  • The big drop came from Zach Fucale, the Halifax Goaltender.
  • The far right column, "Rise", is the rise in the rankings since the beginning of the season.  Players like Jimmy Lodge, Marko Dano, Chris Bigras and Mueller came from 50 or more spots back to get into the top two rounds.
  • While no one in this draft will drop 206 spots like Nick Ebert in 2012, there were a few collapses in rankings this season:  Will Butcher and Gustav Olofsson are at the top of that ignominous list.
