For those of you unawares, Dimitri Filipovic and I have a running bet each week during the slate of Saturday games. The loser must watch a game of the winner's choosing... and record scoring chances. This week, I had the pleasure of watching the Phoenix Coyotes and the Buffalo Sabres. It was the teams' first meeting since #BUTTGOAL, but, alas, there was to be no legendary moment during the rematch. The only somewhat interesting sequence was when rookie referee Trevor Hanson got hit in the face with a puck after the ricochet off the crossbar from an Oliver Ekman-Larsson shot.
The Sabres won 3-2, but obviously didn't deserve the victory, being out-shot 40-28. ExtraSkater page for the game is here, and the scoring chances are below.

Buffalo is very top-heavy. Their bottom six did a good job of shutting down events both ways, but Zemgus Girgensons is my first star on the night. Led the Sabres in on-ice chances for, wound up with an even differential, and actually scored the shorthanded go-ahead goal early in the third.
Ditto Phoenix. The line centred by Martin Hanzal was all over the Sabres, with Radim Vrbata generating a lot of chances off the rush and the cycle game. Hanzal led the game with 7 shots and Vrbata had 5. That slacker, Tim Kennedy, only had one.
It's no secret that Oliver Ekman-Larsson is having a tough year, and though he's been reunited with a healthy Zbynek Michalek, he's still bleeding shots against. Buffalo only got anything going when OEL was on the ice in this game.
Here are team totals:
|EV BUF||EV PHX||PP BUF||PP PHX||SH BUF||SH PHX||Tot. BUF||Tot. PHX|
We hope this exercise has been enlightening as well as educational.
