This morning, the Oilers announced that they have recalled defencemen Jordan Oesterle and Griffin Reinhart from the Bakersfield Condors, while also placing Juhjar Khaira and Matt Benning on the injured reserve.

As Lowetide wrote this morning, Matt Benning has been a highly effective player during his time in Edmonton. However, after being rocked with an unexpected hit early last night, he has now been placed on the IR with no immediate timetable for his return.

Juhjar Khaira showed well in just three games this season with the Oilers before he was injured in a January 18 game against the Florida Panthers. While it hasn't been clear as to what the injury is to Khaira, in yesterdays Capilano Rehab Injury Report, Jason Gregor commented saying that Khaira is still unable to shoot a puck.

This season, Jordan Oesterle has appeared in 24 games with the Condors and has scored three goals and 15 assists for 18 total points. The 24-year old defenceman has played in 23 NHL games with the Oilers in which he has posted six assists.

Last season, Oesterle made the most of his NHL time scoring five assists and averaging 21:52 TOI per game in 17 games with the Oilers.

After going undrafted, the Oilers signed Oesterle as a free agent on March 31st, 2014.

Drafted fourth overall in the 2011 NHL entry draft by the New York Islanders, Griffin Reinhart's first three pro seasons have not gone exactly as planned. The big defenceman has had his struggles in finding any significant NHL time with the Islanders, or the Oilers.

Acquired in a controversial trade at the 2015 Draft, Reinhart has slowly been making forward progress in his career. This season, he has played in 29 games with the Bakersfield Condors putting up 11 assists in that time.

He has played in just 37 NHL games, scoring two assists.

With there being a need for defencemen in Edmonton due to injury, it was interesting to see that the Oilers didn't use their recall on Mark Fayne. The Oilers opted to put Fayne in the AHL for this season, where he has scored nine points in 13 games.

As the deadline nears, it will be interesting to see how Peter Chiarelli and co. handle the trade market. Reinhart could be getting a test drive here in the NHL.

If we trade Davidson, I could still see Reinhart being taken by LV. After Nurse our next LHD will be Oesterle, which isn't TOO bad I guess.

With Benning out, do you see the oilers grabbing Frank Corrado off waivers from Toronto? RH shot, low risk and arguably better than oesterle or reinhart.

If Griffin can come in and be a solid 3rd pairing guy for the rest of the season I can almost forgive Chia for giving up the 16th overall (Matthew Barzal) and 33rd overall (Mitchell Stephens) for him.

Almost.

This organization never fails to boggle my mind. Why call up 2 lefties one game before a 5 day break when they could be playing in bakersfield? Wouldn't it make sense to bring one up only since we will probably run gryba anyway?

This recall will decide Reinharts fate. If he proves competent, he might just have a career with Edmonton. If not, he might be a throw-in on a trade.

Rumor has it that Russell will be out tomorrow, so I imagine Reinhart and Gryba come in. Oesterle will be here in case an injury happens in practice and they don't want him playing the night before, flying out and trying to make a morning game in worst case scenario.

@TruthHurts98

I guess that makes sense. It just sucks gutting the d on our farm team to that degree. I guess that is what it's there for though.

When are Caggiula and Slepy going down to the A?

Nice stint but they're not ready yet for the big league.

And Chia has been really worried really asking -begging- for your forgiveness for almost 2 years. Almost.

Is it just me or is anyone else glad Matt isn't our GM? Trading away Davidson helps our playoff push how exactly? Depth at defence is what most playoff teams are trying to acquire. Hope Rienhart has a good showing! Boys really gotta pick up their game hope they come out flying!! Go Oil!!!!!

Caggulia doesn't belong at centre, can't win face-offs. But at least he is feisty and has drive. Remember the big goal in SJ? When was the last time baby Nuge scored or even won a face-off? Slepyshev is producing more than Ebs, at least he hits and doesn't fall over when the opposing player sneezes in his vicinity. Nuge, Poop and Ebs underperforming is highlighting other players lack of performance even more.

And the biggest under performer at 5 by 5 for salary on the Edmonton Oilers is Milan Lucic aka Fred Flinstone.

this is likely it for Reinhart and Oesterle. if they show well, they may have a future here, if not then it's likely bye bye.

If you watched the draft, I don't think Chia even forgave himself right after pulling the trigger on that deal.

Grow up, so you are saying somebody held a gun to his head to do it?

It went wrong, could have gone right, get over it and: stop that entitlement notion Chia doesn't owe you apologies or explanations. If you think he does , you are hilarious.
