Draft Review - 2017

With the summer winding down, we at Canucks Army are looking to fill the dead space between our Top 20 countdown and the start of the World Cup of Hockey. This week, I've decided to head back to the draft, and I'm going to be looking at the past, present and future on Canucks drafting and NHL prospects by going over the 2015, 2016, and 2017 NHL Entry Drafts and how they pertain to the Canucks.

After going over the 2015 and 2016 drafts, as well as some left over picks from 2016 that could be mid-to-late round selections next year, we move onto the 2017 Entry Draft. While the future is far from certain, it's entirely possible that one, if not many, Canadian teams will find themselves in the running for some of these top end prospects. Let's take a look at who they are.

Using Marcel Projections for Goalies in the 2016-17 season

As most of us already know, goalies are "voodoo".

This makes projecting how our favorite team's goalie will do next year (unless that goalie is Henrik Lundqvist) rather difficult.

To help with that, we can make projections. It's never easy to project a player's performance for any upcoming season, but it's also not a futile exercise.Specifically I'll make Marcel projections for goalies.

What's Marcel?

It's a forecasting model created by Tom Tango (some examples). He used it for baseball and we'll adapt it to hockey.  Of course, this has actually been done before for goalies here by Garik16. But while he used regular Sv%, I'll attempt to project Low/Mid/High Sv% (courtesy of Corsica.Hockey) as it gives us a better look at a goalie's performance.

Jakub Nakladal and the cap space dilemma

Mike FAIL

It's September, the World Cup of Hockey tournament is about to start for real, and the Calgary Flames still have to sign Johnny Gaudreau. But an underlying and rather valuable asset remains unsigned as well: Jakub Nakladal.

After his well above-average showing to close out last season, the Czech blueliner is among a small contingent of capable NHLers who may warrant a PTO or a contract - whether it's in the NHL or overseas - that can help improve a team immediately.

Training camp is almost here, so we're taking a trip down memory lane and checking out previous Calgary Flames draft classes. Which picks are doing well? Which are doing poorly? And what are reasonable expectations for their performances this coming season?

We close out with the 2016 NHL Draft class! (NHLE calculations from the most recent Hockey Abstract revisions.)
