In Part I of this series on zone starts, we discussed how coaches' are limited in their ability to completely control line deployment, particularly when we talking about only offensive and defensive zone shift starts (which make up a very small portion of all shift starts), as well as why the difference between zone starts and shift starts further muddies the relation between metrics like ZSR or OZS% and the actual intention of the coaches.
I hinted at the end that while starting in a specific zone has a large effect on the shot metrics for that particular shift, the overall effect of zone starts on measures like Corsi and Fenwick is actually quite small. In Part II of this series, we'll explore why that is the case, and discuss how metrics that adjust for zone starts function.

Hi everybody! It's annoying Leafs person.
WAIT! Wait... This isn't a Leafs blog.
The Nation Network overlord people thought it would be fun for me to try a weekly nation-wide post. I told them that I don't get nearly enough hate on the Sportsnet Facebook page so that sounds like a great idea.
Here's a few things I thought were noteworthy this week.

Whether you watch the games, look at the stats page, or combine both, it is safe to say all of us usually miss many things in each game. We can't pick up everything watching the game live, and we can look at various stats afterwards, but they too don't tell us everything.
It's what makes hockey debates so enjoyable or intense, because there is often more to the story.

With Calgary Flames 2016 first round pick Matthew Tkachuk playing in his 10th National Hockey League contest of the season last night in San Jose, the first year of his entry level contract has began to run. Aside from cementing his spot on the Flames roster – for now, at least – it's not immediately obvious what other implications his sticking with the club has.
After some digging into old our friend, the CBA, and poking around, here are a few things to keep in mind regarding what Tkachuk staying on with the Flames means in the larger sense.

This season is only 11 games old, but it seems that with each 2-3 game chunk of this schedule, we've had a different "Whoa, [insert rookie name]" storyline to gravitate towards. If this is what life as a Leafs supporter is going to be like, establishing favourites among this trio of Matthews, Nylander, and Marner, is bound to happen. But that's part of the fun of being a fan of a non-garbage team. This is all new.
With Marner's light-up of the Sabres last night, he's the trending topic currently. Before that it was Nylander who went on his powerplay rampage. And of course, to kick things off, Matthews left a crater where the Canadian Tire Centre once stood.
