monday musings

It was another rollercoaster weekend for Oilers fans. You were on a high after Friday's convincing victory over Chicago, but the winning ride didn't last long after yesterday's loss to the Florida Panthers.

We are officially past the halfway point of the NHL season, with only the Rangers, Canucks, Panthers and Blue Jackets not playing 41 games, but we've seen 627 of 1230 games played.

Here are some thoughts on the first half and some expectations for the second.

Remembering Teemu as number 8 goes to the rafters

In a game against the Jets on Sunday night, the Ducks raised Teemu Selanne’s number 8 to the rafters at The Pond, permanently enshrining the greatest and most important player in the history of the franchise. In memory of Teemu’s career, let’s take a look back at just how incredible a player he was.

Vinny Lecavalier is being paid $1,030.29 an hour to play against the Lightning

On Monday, the Tampa Bay Lightning are going to head to the Wells Fargo Centre to take on the Flyers, meaning Vinny Lecavalier is going to take on the team he once captained and won a Stanley Cup with before being bought out. Let’s assume this is going to be a clean, quick game that’s over by 10:00 pm ET. In those three hours, Tampa Bay is going to pay Lecavalier roughly $3,090.87 to play against them.

The Jackets show commitment to Bobrovsky, the face of their franchise

It really wasn’t that long ago that Sergei Bobrovsky was dumped by the Philadelphia Flyers to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a collection of draft picks. Geez, they grow up so fast, don’t they? As we all know, the Flyers ended up buying out Ilya Bryzgalov while Bobrovsky went on to win the Vezina trophy. Columbus sent a message loud and clear that they won’t make the same mistake that the Flyers made, as they opened up their wallets for the new face of their franchise.

The Leafs are pressed right up against the cap, something's gotta give

It doesn’t take much analysis to realize that things are pretty rotten in Toronto. After firing Randy Carlyle, the Leafs came out and laid an egg at home, getting shelled 6-2 by the Washington Capitals. The Leafs, who are 2-8-0 in their last 10 games, are quickly slipping out of playoff contention in the Eastern Conference, and with their current salary cap situation, it’s going to be really difficult for them to do anything about it.
