We all have our favorites—and some of them play for different teams. An example: Vladimir Sabotka. The former Boston Bruins forward—whose rights currently belong to the St. Louis Blues—may or may not return to North America this fall. Some Blues observers are growing tired of the dance, and suggesting the team trade the veteran. If that does come to pass, the Edmonton Oilers should be very aggressive in attempts to acquire him.

Joey Laleggia is still in his entry-level deal, but at age 24 his time is now. The offensive defender needs to show well during training camp and in the 2016-17 season in order to make a solid impression. With Brad Hunt off the team in Bakersfield, can Laleggia spike offensively and get noticed?

One of the subjects I see Oilers fans talk about at length is the protected list for the expansion draft next summer. History tells us that we are far away from knowing the actual list—the 2016-17 season will have an enormous impact on the decision. Even with that understood, I am not sure we can be certain about the names who will be protected on defense. Darnell Nurse (in photo by Mark Williams) is not eligible for the expansion draft, but could have a major impact on the final protected list.

Leon Draisaitl (in photo by Mark Williams) will be counted on to center a line that will no doubt feature a substantially lesser wingman than Taylor Hall. If Todd McLellan can find the soft minutes for his young center, who might we see playing wing with Leon?

For AHL forwards, rookie numbers at age 20 give us some idea about offensive ability—and how far their careers may go. Kyle Platzer didn't get a lot of playing time this season, but estimated time on ice gives us a chance to compare him against other 20-year olds on a more level playing field. Let's have a look.
