What might a Chad Johnson contract extension look like?

With the new year fast approaching, the conversation is going to start picking up on potential contract extensions for players like Chad Johnson. That's because players on one-year deals are eligible to sign extensions starting Jan. 1. 

Is it too early for the Flames to start going down that road with Johnson? And what might a new deal look like for one of Calgary's most pleasant surprises this season?

Should the Flames protect Micheal Ferland in the expansion draft?

Assuming the Calgary Flames elect to protect one goalie, three defencemen, and seven forwards in June's expansion draft, the team is going to face one tough decision: who should that seventh protected forward be? 

While I think there might be some debate among Flames fans, the decision is pretty clear to me. Of the possibilities, Micheal Ferland makes the most sense to be Calgary's final protected player.

3 observations from the Flames road trip

The Calgary Flames just completed their longest road trip of the season, playing six games in nine nights in the Eastern Conference. With a record of 3-2-1, the Flames earned seven of a possible 12 points and return home one game closer to the .500 mark than when they left. 

Three things jumped out at me during Calgary's excursion, two negative and one positive.

Matthew Tkachuk: The season's biggest surprise

Calgary Flames fans were elated when Matthew Tkachuk fell to the team at number six overall in June's NHL Draft, and for good reason. Tkachuk was coming off a banner season with the OHL's London Knights, filled an organizational need for the Flames, and in his on-ice personality, brought the team something they didn't have. I thought Tkachuk had a chance to make Calgary's roster out of training camp, but by no means did I see him making the type of impact he has to this point.
