It all comes down to this: the Sens and Pens play for their playoff lives on Tuesday

I’ll be honest, this isn’t what I expected from the Eastern Conference playoff race.

A week ago, I broke down the playoff race in the East and figured that it was down to three teams and one spot — the Bruins, Senators and Panthers. Since then, the Bruins have heated up, while the Red Wings and Penguins are imploding, making the standings a hell of a lot more unpredictable than they were last week. Now there’s three teams tied with 95 points and the Senators on the outside looking in with 93 points.

The best part about it, though, is the Senators are going to face the Penguin tomorrow night in a game that will very likely determine which team grabs a playoff spot in the confusing Eastern Conference.

The playoff dream for the Panthers may be all but dead at this point, but it’s still been a pretty interesting season in Sunrise. The Panthers have an exciting core of young players, but perhaps the most interesting aspect of the team is they boast both the NHL’s active leader in wins for a goaltender and points scored by a skater. It’s an interesting blend of young talent and veteran legacy, that’s for sure.

I’m sure most people know that already, but Roberto Luongo and Jaromir Jagr have both been tearing up their respective all time leader boards this season. Jagr currently sits fourth all time with 1,798 points, while Luongo is 11th all time with 400 wins.

Realistically, where will these guys end up? Can Luongo get anywhere near Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur? Can Jagr surpass Gordie Howe and Mark Messier and become the second more prolific scorer in league history?

A look at the NHL's deadline deals a month later

A month ago, we watched as one of the most interesting trade deadlines in recent memory unfolded. It appeared as if the deadline itself was going to be relatively anticlimactic since most of the big name players were moved before the big day. Much to everyone’s surprise, deadline day saw a flurry of moves with a handful of surprising names swapping jerseys.

How do some of those interesting moves look a month later? Let’s take a look (at 10 of them!)
