The Edmonton Oilers enjoyed a massive improvement from 2015-16 to 2016-17, jumping a whopping 33 points in the standings and qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in over a decade. A full season of Connor McDavid and Oscar Klefbom coupled with added depth around the lineup in the form of Milan Lucic, Adam Larsson, and Kris Russell helped transform the Oilers from basement-dwelling joke into a playoff team.

Now that the organization's decade of darkness is over, it's time to take the next step forward — Stanley Cup contention. Oilers fans, and the organization as a whole, were thrilled with what the team accomplished this year, but simply reaching the second round of the playoffs and injecting some excitement into Edmonton isn't going to cut it again in 2017-18.

The next iteration of this year’s NHL Draft Scout Series takes us to the Western Canada and the WHL and company. Usually, we just focus on just the WHL, but this year a defenceman from the AJHL’s Brooks Bandits has forced us to expand our range to include Junior A hockey, as well.

FutureConsiderations Head Western Scout Justin Froese was kind enough to join us to explain why Cale Makar is someone to be excited about, and an all around look at what Western Canada has to offer for the 2017 NHL Draft.

Because It's the Cap: New York Rangers Offseason Preview

The New York Rangers have been a steady playoff team for the past decade largely due to the goaltending prowess of Henrik Lundqvist, but have unfortunately come up short these past several years, including this year’s second round exit at the hands of the totally beatable Ottawa Senators. It’s yet another disappointing end for the King with no Cup, and as he ages the Rangers’ situation becomes ever more dire; it would be a colossal failure of management to have the best goaltender of a generation fall into your lap and not be able to close the deal on at least one championship during his reign.

As such, the Rangers, who underwent something of a retool last summer now must finish the task and revamp this squad in order to build a truly Cup contending team for the last several years of Henrik’s contract. Anything else, quite simply, would be a failure, leaving GM Jeff Gorton with a heavy task in front of him.

The Nation Network Notebook is a regular feature that rounds up interesting news, stories, and rumours from around the NHL that don’t quite deserve their own article.

Silly season is about to begin. The Flames and Jets reportedly have interest in the Rangers' Antti Raanta. Teams have until 5 p.m. ET to ask a player with a NMC to waive for the upcoming expansion draft. There's too many rumours surrounding the Chicago Blackhawks potentially moving a core player.

In terms of both their success in the playoffs, and their success in getting rid of any assets of significant value who were going to walk at the deadline, the St. Louis Blues may have had the best season. While they aren't contending for a Cup anymore, they managed to go all the way to game six in the second round in a year where some anticipated a step back, and this was WITHOUT Kevin Shattenkirk, who they traded at the deadline in order to not risk losing him for nothing.

Looking forward, St. Louis is in a decent situation for a team like theirs, but it's certainly not perfect either, so let's dive into their cap situation and offseason plan.
