Future Free Agents: Dealing with impending UFA Loui Eriksson while keeping Brad Marchand in mind

The Boston Bruins have to be one of the league’s biggest surprises this season. After missing the playoffs last year, they fired Peter Chiarelli, the architect of their 2011 Stanley Cup winning team, and handed the keys to former defenceman Don Sweeney. From there, Sweeney spent his first summer at the helm dismantling the organization, as he jettisoned Dougie Hamilton and Milan Lucic to Western Conference teams for a collection of draft picks and prospects. And well, Martin Jones, who was quickly traded for a draft pick and a prospect.

After their mini garage sale, it was widely expected that the Bruins were going to entire somewhat of rebuilding phase in which they likely wouldn’t be competing too aggressively for a playoff spot. Now, a week before the trade deadline, the Bruins are sitting in a tie for second place in the Atlantic Division and appear to have the potential to do some legitimate damage in the playoffs. That said, Loui Eriksson, an important aspect to their elite offence, is set to hit unrestricted free agency this summer, so the Bruins are facing the difficult prospect of either keeping him for their playoff run and trying to re-sign him, or selling him at the deadline for an asset and not risk letting him walk away for nothing.

Trading P.K. Subban would be a disaster for the Montreal Canadiens

Apparently the Montreal Canadiens are gauging the trade market on former Norris Trophy winner P.K. Subban. They aren’t actively shopping him or anything, but Louis Jean of TVA Sports tweeted that another team executive he had spoken to said his name had come up in potential trade talks. Oh boy.

Things are rotten in Montreal right now. After finishing at the top of the Atlantic Division with 110 points last season, the Habs have struggled mightily without Carey Price in net, as they currently sit on the outside of the playoffs with only 23 games remaining in their schedule.

That said, as bad as things have been this season, and as painful as it’s been to watch, in absolutely no way is trading a player of Subban’s calibre going to make the situation any better. For anybody out there who believes the Habs would be better off without their All-Star defenceman: take a breath, grab a glass of water, and let us remind ourselves just how fantastic a player he actually is.

Future Free Agent Profiles: Alex Goligoski and Jason Demers

Earlier this week, I talked about how the Winnipeg Jets and Dustin Byfuglien reaching an agreement on a five-year contract extension significantly raised the value of Keith Yandle, both as a rental at the trade deadline and on the free agent market come July. It isn’t just Yandle who’s going to enjoy an increase in value thanks to Big Buff’s new contract, though. Alex Goligoski, who’s been a minute-munching machine for the Dallas Stars over the past few years, is certainly going to be a coveted asset on the open market this summer.

Since the Stars are already pretty thin on defence and they're gearing up for a long playoff run, it would be absolutely shocking if Goligoski was moved before the deadline on Feb. 29. That said, there’s no guarantee that him and the Stars are going to get a new contract worked out. Not only do they need to be careful with their spending, as Jamie Benn is set to become a UFA in July 2017, but they also have another low-key defensive rock in Jason Demers hitting free agency this summer.

This summer, it’s probably going to come down to one or the other in Dallas with Goligoski and Demers. But which player is the right one to invest in?
